Rio Ferdinand says this is not the Kylian Mbappe I met and warns no player is bigger than the

Rio Ferdinand has sent a warning to Kylian Mbappe that no player is bigger than his club, following reports the France superstar feels ‘betrayed’ at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Manchester United legend told a story about Wayne Rooney to give Mbappe a lesson in how to be a team player, and is also baffled why he isn’t happy playing in a ‘dream’ team with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Multiple sources across European football are reporting that Mbappe’s relationship with PSG has completely broken down, with the player feeling promises have been broken by the club and he is now seeking to leave in the January transfer window.

Liverpool have been described as the ‘only feasible option’ to sign the 23-year-old, but questions have been raised over how the Reds could afford to sign the World Cup winner.

A move to Manchester City might be more realistic, and even Saudi Arabia-backed Newcastle United if it’s only about the money, but it’s more likely – if he goes anywhere – Mbappe will end up completing his desired more to Real Madrid, despite claims the Ligue 1 champions do not want to sell him to Los Blancos.

One of the reasons Mbappe reportedly feels ‘betrayed’ is that he was said to be promised by chiefs when he signed a new contract earlier this year that they would sign a new No.9 to allow him the same kind of freedom in the wide areas he enjoys for the France national team.

That hasn’t happened, with Mbappe deployed as the team’s centre-forward ‘pivot’ this season with Messi and Neymar either side of him, and he hit out at his role after PSG’s 0-0 draw with Reims by sarcastically posting the phrase #pivotgang on Instagram.

That post is what led to this latest news over his PSG future, and Ferdinand says it’s out of character for a player he recently met, saying he came across as a ‘humble’ and ‘chilled out guy’.

The legendary defender also issued a warning to the forward about his ‘moaning’ – citing a former Old Trafford teammate.

“I think PSG will be disappointed [by Mbappe’s post] and as a teammate you’d be disappointed by that, because you know the reaction that’s going to bring, the spotlight and the negativity that will surround the club,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Obviously he’s disgruntled, he’s unhappy about the position he’s playing with…

“Listen, I played with Wayne Rooney who was a generational talent, he’ll go down as one of the best players we’ve ever seen in England, and in some games he was asked to play left-wing.

“I knew that he hated it, he didn’t want to do it, but nobody else would ever know he didn’t enjoy it and didn’t want to play there, because he sacrificed parts of his game for his teammates. You have to do that, you have to be able to see the bigger picture.

“By the way, Kylian is playing on the same team, waking up every morning and training and being on the same pitch as Lionel Messi and Neymar! It’s a dream scenario for anyone, you’d want that, surely? I find it hard to believe that he’s moaning.

“I met him last season and he seemed such a humble, chilled out, calm, cool and collected guy – this narrative and this persona I’m seeing thrown out there – whether it’s true or not, I don’t know – it’s not what I saw or who I met at all.

“I’d love to see him come out now and say, ‘Yeah this is me’ and own it, or come out and say, ‘Guys, I don’t know where this story has come from, but I’m fully committed to my club’.

“It needs that, this story is so big that it needs that clarity.”

Joe Cole added that the very fact Mbappe hasn’t come out and rubbished the story yet means ‘some part of it is true’.

Meanwhile, Mbappe’s behaviour has raised big questions over his attitude, with former Premier League striker Darren Bent warning Liverpool against trying to sign the France international.

Fellow talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor also reacted to the story, saying Man City and even Arsenal wouldn’t consider signing the ‘problem’ star either.

“If Pep [Guardiola] could sign Mbappe tomorrow for Man City he wouldn’t – no way,” said the former Aston Villa captain.

“I would keep Gabriel Jesus if I was Arsenal. If Mbappe came to Arsenal he would ruin the whole harmony the team have got there.

“There would be arguments and players would fall out because of Mbappe. It’s a problem for PSG.

“Maybe when he does leave for Real Madrid he will become their problem.”
