Terrence J was born Terrence Jenkins on April 21, 1982 in Queens, New York. He grew up in North Carolina where he attended Northern Nash High School. He worked at a local radio station throughout his high school years. After moving to Greensboro, North Carolina to attend North Carolina A&T University, he began DJ-ing for his college radio station, and for two other local radio stations. He graduated with a degree in Mass Communication.

While working in Florida, his father told him that BET was holding auditions for a new pair of hosts for their show, "106 & Park". He flew to New York and auditioned unsuccessfully, but tried again in Atlanta, and was offered a job as co-host in 2005. He would go on to appear in 48 episodes of the show.
